TIPS
✔ Dedicate a full day to discovering the beautiful towns around the lake. While Como is the urban hub, the lakeside villages are gems, home to stunning lakeside villas.
✔ To move around and explore Lake Como, especially the smaller towns, comfortable shoes are essential.
✔ There are many public drinking fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless stated otherwise. Tap water is also drinkable—bring your reusable bottle!
✔ For an easy hike with beautiful mountain views, try the Greenway del Lago di Como, a well-marked walking trail connecting the towns from Colonno to Griante. It has few inclines, and a bus will take you to the starting point in Colonno.
✔ Look for traditional restaurants to taste local specialties such as dishes made with Lake Como fish.
✔ In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services close during midday, so plan your shopping accordingly.
✔ Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and may be dangerous. However, for those wishing to take a dip, there are some options:
In Como, there's an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, but swimming in the lake itself is generally discouraged and mostly forbidden.
There are beaches in other lake towns. A lovely small beach awaits you in Careno, though it may be crowded on weekends.
Locals and visitors also enjoy going to Nesso, where the more adventurous can dive into the lake from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall.
The Lido of Bellagio and the pebble beach of San Giovanni are great options for those wanting to explore the charming town of Bellagio, located where the two branches of the lake meet.
✔ Lake Como is in a mountainous region. The nearby Pre-Alps might not seem high, but the weather is affected by the mountains, and temperatures can change quickly. Be cautious during hikes and always carry warm and waterproof clothing.
