TIPS
We recommend dedicating a day to visiting the wonderful towns around the lake. Como is the main urban center, but the towns are gems with stunning lakeside villas.
To get around and stroll by Lake Como, especially in the small towns, comfortable shoes are essential.
There are many public drinking fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also potable. Bring your refillable bottle!
If you're looking for a relatively easy hike with beautiful views of the mountains, the Greenway del Lago di Como is a well-marked trail connecting lakeside towns from Colonno to Griante, without too many steep climbs. A bus can take you to the starting point in Colonno.
Look for traditional restaurants to sample local dishes, especially those featuring fish from Lake Como.
In Italy, many small shops and services close in the middle of the day, so plan your shopping accordingly.
Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. For those who wish to swim, there are some options. In Como, there's an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, but swimming in the lake is not recommended and is mostly prohibited. There are beaches in other lakeside locations, including a small beach in Careno, which may be crowded on weekends. Locals and visitors also love Nesso, where adventurous swimmers can dive into the lake from an ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall.
The Lido di Bellagio and the pebbly beach of San Giovanni await those who want to travel and explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the center of the two lake branches.
Lake Como is in a mountainous region. The surrounding Pre-Alps may not seem very high, but the climate is influenced by the nearby mountains, and temperatures can change quickly. Pay close attention to weather conditions during hikes, and bring warm and waterproof clothing!
EXPERIENCES
There are plenty of amazing activities to do around Lake Como! We can suggest and help organize the following:
Private boat trips
Kayak/SUP on the lake
Seaplane flights over the lake
Yoga and meditation classes
Wine tastings
Cooking classes
